Declared a new species back in 2006

(Russel,Bergman Systematics and biogeography of the widespread Neotropical gekkonid genus Thecadactylus (Squamata), with the description of a new cryptic species Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2007, 149, 339–370.)

The study shows a distinct genetic lineage of a once thought homogeneous species. The major distributional difference seems to be the new species are dominant in Amazonian headwaters of Peru, Ecuador and Colombia
