GUest Reviews for Otorongo Amazon River Lodge

“Perfect ending to long holidays in Latin America: jungle survivors”

5 of 5 stars

I stayed in the Otorongo lodge with a friend at the end of 2014. We actually celebrated the New Years there. It was an amazing experience: the location is perfect, the garden is just breathtaking, the staff and the owner are extremely nice and friendly, food is great, rooms are clean and cosy... The expeditions feel very natural, one sees and learns so much! Fishing the piranhas was one of the key bonuses on top of regular walks in the forest/boat rides and spotting of exotic animals. The guides are impressive: knowledgeable, extremely caring - they would almost breathe for you. I felt extremely safe and relaxed.Definitely recommend this experience.

Spent 6 days fishing with Oto Ex. Incredible adventure. Cought more than 10 different fish species including 10 kg tiger catfish on a light spinning rod. Great people, location, weather and perhaps the best "fish & rice" in the world :)

“jungle pants”

We had a great time in the jungle at the lodge. It is not a fancy place with limited electricity and sometime privacy but worth every penny. We had a great guide Wilver and boat driver Saul. They were open to what we wanted to do and put up with us being late to just about everything. The room with the hammocks was a great place to nap. The food was good and much better than I expected. the fruit juices were all very good. Fishing for piranha was a lot of fun. jungle pants aka light weight long pants were needed. also take a good flashlight or two because it gets very dark in the rooms at night. Highly recommend this lodge because the staff was great!

“Great guide and good value”

Stayed for 5 nights here, The accommodation was quite comfortable and the staff friendly. Our guide Edison was fantastic and we made good friends with him. The food was pretty good, plenty of it, we just wish there was some more fresh local fruit to try besides bananas. We saw plenty of animals and were glad to stay the 5 nights. Rooms are clean but basic, nothing to complain about though we had good nights sleep.

“Amazing experience!”

We chose Otorongo Expeditions for its high rating on Tripadvisor, its mention in the Lonely Planet Guide, its professional website and the promise of an en-suite bathroom! I had looked into at least 6 other companies but that research only made OtoEx stand out more.

The office in Iquitos arranged transfers from and to the airport through our hotels at either end of out stay and even printed our our boarding passes for us for our return journey.

Our actual stay in the rainforest was very enjoyable, the bedroom was comfortable and the mosquito net was reassuring! The hammock room is a delightful place to relax between lunch and the afternoon activities. All of the trips we made out were interesting and different and we saw lots of birds and mammals throughout our 4 night, 5 day stay. The food was excellent - as long as you love rice - I do! The fish was very fresh and tasty and I always looked forward to meal times. There are dim lights in the main dining room in the evenings but that's about it - we forgot to bring spare batteries for our torches so spent the whole week worrying that they were going to run out so trying not to use them too much!!

Our guide was very knowledgeable and professional though I got them impression that he was grateful that we didn't ask to spend a night camping! He made good suggestions throughout our stay but when we got brave and asked to visit the local village for a football match he was willing to do as we asked and we had a great afternoon. He was a fountain of knowledge on 'the way it used to be' in the rainforest which was interesting.

If you are worried about needing an alarm clock - don't be! The parrots woke us up by 6.10 each morning in plenty of time for 7am and if they don't wake you up, the other guests moving about will.

I will definitely be recommending Otorongo Expeditions to all who wish to visit the rainforest and would return tomorrow myself if I had the opportunity!
