Herping the Peruvian Amazon

โ€œHerping โ€œderived from the academic term herpetology which is the study of reptiles and amphibians

For this activity our guests usually spend more time searching into the wee hours of the night for reptiles or amphibians.

Right around our lodge it is possible to see many coveted species like the rainbow boa, anaconda, bushmaster .

As well as 7 species of poison dart frogs, one which was discovered by Owner Anthony Giardenelli, the โ€œwhite sands Amazonica morphโ€

Anthony has been guiding Herping trips for years , all the time training local guides to recognize and identify species that we come across

An absolutely amazing place! A beautiful location, the best guides, delicious food and a humble idea of supporting the local community, recycling as much as possible and protecting the rainforest make Otorongo Expeditions a must see and must visit destination. I went there to explore the wildlife and I was not disappointed - a huge variety of insects, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and more were just at their doorstep. I will be back!

Awesome natural history oriented trip in the Peruvian Amazon

It was this time two years ago that I was gearing up and becoming very excited about my first trip to the Amazon. Nostalgia has driven me to finally complete a review. Can't say enough good things about the staff and lodge. Great food, clean rooms, easy to relax and get a good night sleep or nap at the lodge, very quiet. My primary focus was excursions to find and photograph Amazonian flora and fauna. The skills of my guides Edison and Juan in finding wildlife and navigating the river, creeks, and forest was seemingly supernatural. Edison proved to have an extensive working knowledge of the regional ethnobotany and ecology that allows valuable insight to be gained by anyone with an interest in the natural history of the region. Additionally, the lodge owner Anthony keeps a collection of Amazonian natural history books available to guests in the dining area, which I appreciated, and is himself quite knowledgeable on and willing to talk about many of the ecological aspects of the region. There are too many instances that could be considered "trip highlights" to list here. Suffice to say that if you are an ecology/natural history buff interested in the Amazon and looking to take a trip, look no further than Otorongo expeditions.
