Sample Itinerary 5 Days at Otorongo Lodge
Example
This is an example itinerary an individual or group may create with their guide for their 5 days at the lodge.
Itineraries are flexible and customized to meet individual requests.
Includes Transportation to the lodge, 5 days, 4 nights of lodging with daily excursions and optional overnight camping. Free time for relaxing, exploring or other activities.
Day 1
Guests are picked up from the Iquitos Airport upon arrival.
Quick city tour with options to visit the Belen open-air Market.
Departure from port of Nanay via our private speed boat. 2 hour river ride and arrival to Otorongo Expeditions Amazon River lodge.
Basic orientation and lunch.
Short walk behind the lodge in the rainforest in search of wildlife like sloths and poison dart frogs.
Dinner followed by optional nocturnal excursion by boat, canoe or foot (depending of season or weather) looking for insects, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and birds.
Day 2
Departure by boat to Ayzana to canoe through flooded forest to see the prehistoric looking Hoatzin birds. Other possibilities are various species of monkeys, such as howler and squirrel monkey, sloths or anacondas.
Be surrounded in the thick jungle where species of plants and animals lives are still unclassified by modern science.
Return to the lodge for lunch, followed by a visit to a Native community to learn about their culture, fishing practices, farming and use of ancient mystical medicines derived from the rainforest.
Return to the lodge, dinner. Optional nocturnal trip about the grounds or river.
Day 3
Breakfast on board and off to Cocha Ayzana (black water) to fish for piranha. In this area we will see giant water lily pads, and short walk to see the enormous Ceiba trees.
Return to the lodge for lunch and a rest.
Boat ride in the River Oran and jungle walk exploring the area to see animals commonly found in this ecosystem. Visit our reforestation plot and plant a tree or two.
Dinner back at the lodge. Optional nocturnal excursion to search for more Wildlife
Day 4 -
Visit Fossil Creek Wildlife Reserve (optional overnight)
After breakfast, we depart for our over night camping trip. Generally 1-2 hours of travel by boat or foot. Sleep in a rustic style hut in the middle of Fossil Creek Wildlife Reserve. Observations of different ecosystems. Chances to see more exuberant wildlife. This area is unique due to its transitional ecosystems , connecting lowland with terra firme primary rainforest.
Here you can visit the waterfalls and famous Fossil ridden creek where remnants of megafauna from the Miocene period are apparent
Day 5
Early rise to observe wildlife in the transitional forests of Fossil Creek. Follow jaguar tracks, check wallowing hotspots for other creatures. Breakfast at camp and return to the lodge.
Lunch after a quick shower
Return to Iquitos in the afternoon
Other Activities
You may have a few hours between excursions, you can choose from a few different activities that you may do yourself.
Swimming in Quebrada Oran.
Fishing near the lodge.
Bird watching near the lodge.
Guided walk through the botanical garden near the lodge.
Get to know a local dwelling.
Sunset on the Amazon .
Bonfire and story telling.
Siesta in the hammock room.
Weaving class with a local from a village.
