The global big day team at Otorongo had quite the experience speed cataloging birds in four distinct ecosystems found near the locality of Quebrada Oran where Otorongo Expeditions Amazon River Lodge operates.

Our team consisted of Myself (Anthony) ,Josias Tello an Expert birding guide and Maykel Zambrano as our driver/logistics.

We Started at 4 am May 5th 2018, half of the birds were recognized by sound only (Yes we are that good) Many were enticed to speak up with recordings or our own vocal imitations.

To make matters interesting, the Rain began at 5:45 am.

If you are not someone interested in birds, you would be quite startled otherwise to see these grown men cooing and whistling to the branches of the trees.

Location 1: Camp 1 at Fossil Creek Wildlife Reserve. We started out writing down sounds of owls but the most noteworthy would be the distant murmurs of the Nocturnal Currasow (Nothocrax urumutum).

By 5:40 we had over twenty birds and the rain started. We hiked up the hill to Primary Terra Firme forest of Anteater Ridge Trail. Expert birding guide Josias Tello immediately whips out his cell to reproduce the call of the Endemic Black-Headed antbird (Percnostola rufifrons amazonas). Within minutes we had a confirmed sighting right on the trail!

The rain was not holding us back from trekking and noting everything we could. We dropped down the slopes to a small ravine between hills noting mixed foraging flocks of many species. After another hill we dropped into transitional forest and into the Varzea flooded forest of the Lowest eastern edge of the Napo River.

Location 2. Trip by boat from Transitional forest of Fossil Creek through the Varzea of Ayzana to the Main Amazon River near Village Roca Eterna and Ayzana. The rain was persistant and allowed for very few images [gallery columns="2" size="large" ids="4403,4404"]

Location 3 The eroding red clay banks of terra firme where Amazon King Fishers make their nests between Ayzana and Oran Amazon River. Aside from the Southern Lapwing (Rapidly expanding its range with deforestation) We also saw Bank Swallows but cannot confirm it as of yet with photographic evidence.

Location 4 Otorongo Amazon River Lodge.

The rain was subsiding but we still missed some common birds we topped off at the lodge with 33 species leaving out some very common birds such as the white eared jacamar, leaden antwren or cinerous becard.

Location 5 Amazon River Island below Napo River.

Once again Josias manages to get a few more species with recordings including Two species of spinetail and two island specialist antbirds. The highlight for myself though was the bicolored conebill.

Here is the list, where there is a - symbol it means there were too many to count. If you would like a chance to get a list like this on a trip to the Amazon River, make sure to contact Otorongo ExpeditionsOtorongo Expeditions for a birdwatching trip of a lifetime. #GBD2018 #globalbigday2018

We estimated 200 species between all of the ecosystems we were going to register. We did not do bad though with 138, Maybe next year!
